Possible isotopic fractionation effects in material sputtered from minerals

چکیده

We discuss in detail a model which makes definite predictions for the fractionation of isotopes in sputtered material. The fractionation patterns can be nonlinear, and the pattern for a particular set of isotopes depends on the chemical matrix within which those isotopes are contained. Calculations are presented for all nonmonoisotopic elements contained in the minerals perovskite, anorthite, ackermanite, enstatite, and troilite. All isotopes are fractionated at the level of approximately 4-6%o per atomic mass unit. O is always positively fractionated (heavier isotopes puttered preferentially), and heavier elements are generally negatively fractionated (lighter isotopes puttered preferentially). The value of $(1sO: 160) is always less by about 1.8%o than a linear extrapolation based upon the calculated $(170:160) value would suggest. The phenomenon of both negative and positive fractionation patterns from a single target mineral can be used to make an experimental test of the proposed model.

Mass fractionation of the lunar surface by solar wind sputtering

The sputtering of the lunar surface by the solar wind is examined as a possible mechanism of mass fractionation. Simple arguments based on current theories of sputtering and the ballistics of the sputtered atoms suggest that most ejected atoms will have sufficiently high energy to escape lunar gravity. However, the fraction of atoms which falls back to the surface is enriched in the heavier ato...

CORRELATED 0 AND Mg ISOTOPIC ANOMAUES IN ALLENDE INCLUSIONS : II . MAGNESIUM

Mg in two Allende Ca-AI rich inclusions shows large isotopic, mass-dependent fractionation which enriched the heavier isotopes. After normalization, Mg in these inclusions shows negative 6 16 Mg which appears to require the presence of nuclear effects m Mg distinct from 16 AI decay. The Mg mass fractionation is correlated with distinct but smaller fractionation effects for 0 reported by Clayton...

Impact - Induced Devolatilization and Implications for Planetary Accretion Hydrogen Isotopic Fractionation of Serpentine

Impact-induced devolatilization of porous serpentine was investigated using two independent experimental methods, the gas recovery method and the solid recovery method, each yielding nearly identicd results. For shock pressures near incipient devolatilization (Pinitid = 5.0 GPa), the hydrogen isotopic composition of the evolved H20 is very close to that of the starting material. For shock press...

Carbon isotopes of irradiated methane ices: implications for cometary

Frozen CH4 and CH4/Ar were irradiated by protons and 3He2+ ions at 15 and 77K in order to simulate the interaction between the solar wind and the surface of comets. After irradiation, polymerised organic matter is left over as solid residues, whenwarming up the remainingCH4. The carbon isotopic composition of these residueswas determined. Isotopic fractionation between organic residues and meth...

Stable Isotope Signatures of Middle Palaeozoic Ahermatypic Rugose Corals – Deciphering Secondary Alteration, Vital Fractionation Effects, and Palaeoecological Implications

This study investigates stable isotope signatures of five species of Silurian and Devonian deep-water, ahermatypic rugose corals, providing new insights into isotopic fractionation effects exhibited by Palaeozoic rugosans, and possible role of diagenetic processes in modifying their original isotopic signals. To minimize the influence of intraskeletal cements on the observed signatures, the ana...
